What: Black Range Project – Trail Maintenance Weekend on the Scenic Trail
Where: Kingston, NM
When: July 13-14, 8AM-2PM
SNMTA has started a new program to survey and maintain trails in the Black Range of the Gila National Forest and Aldo Leopold Wilderness. We are partnering with folks and organizations from across Southern New Mexico including Silvery City, Hillsboro, Kingston, Truth or Consequences, and Las Cruces to make this project happen.
The first trail work will be on the Scenic Trail which goes from the town of Kingston up to Emory Pass with sweeping views all around. This trail, as well as many others, was damaged by the Silver Fire in 2013. Trail work will consist of clearing blowdown, cutting back locust and other brush from the trail corridor and re-building the trail tread. Members of the Backcountry Horsemen and Heart of the Gila will be assisting with some of the sawyer duties. No experience is necessary but will be very useful. There is no fee for this weekend but donations are always appreciated.
The plan to is to meet in Kingston, NM at the USFS campground at 8am on Saturday. We will discuss the work ahead, hold a tailgate safety talk, and head out to work. Afterwards will be dinner at the Black Range Lodge where we will also be staying the night. There will be trail work on Sunday as well for those that want to stick around. SNMTA will provide food but a side dish or desert to share for Saturday’s supper would be appreciated.
Bring stories, music, etc. to share as we hang out by Percha Creek among the forest on Saturday night.
Space is limited for this event. Please message if you would like to attend. We plan to have another work weekend later in the Summer or Fall.
